Residents of Ndusuazo near Half Assini in the
Jomoro District of the Western Region were
greeted with a horrifying spectacle Wednesday
afternoon when a man strangled his 70-year-old
grandmother leading to her death after accusing
her of witchcraft.
He claims the old lady’s witchcraft prevented
denied the family a representation in Ghana’s
World Cup squad at the ongoing Brazil 2014
tournament.
The suspect, Patrick Nuamah 38 a cargo truck
driver who has since gone under and is being
sought for by the police, claimed owing to his
grandmother’s witchcraft, his cousin, who is very
good at football was unable to make it to the
World Cup.
The police said the suspect accused the
grandmother of bewitching his cousin, one Annor
Nwonzu, leading to his loss of all his footballing
skills and therefore, she (the grandmother) did not
deserve to live.
Black Stars appearance fee
The police added that the suspect accused the
grandmother, Enam Manya for being the main
cause of all the problems and that if his cousin
were to have maintained his dribbling skills he
would have been among those selected for the
World Cup, and consequently improve the
economic wellbeing of the family since players
who participated in the ongoing FIFA World Cup
received $100,000 as appearance fee.
According to the District Police Commander,
Superintendent John F. Dzineku, when the police
got to the scene, the suspect Nuamah, had bolted
and is currently on the run.
He said an eye witness told the police that late
Wednesday morning, the late grandmother looking
so stressed and helpless came to her in tears
claiming that the grandson entered her room and
picked a broom and whipped her with it.
Realizing the distress and sad posture of the old
lady, she comforted her and asked her to either go
back and take her rest or wait in her house while
she (the eyewitness) reported the incident to the
family head.
According to the District Commander, some senior
members of the family quickly set off in an
attempt to console the old lady and to assure her
of their support.
“But before they could get to the house, Nuamah
had already strangled the grandmother to death
and left the scene,” he said.
He said the police were doing everything possible
to get hold of Nuamah to help in their
investigations, adding that the body of the
deceased had since been moved to the morgue.
