Summary: iMovie and Avid do not recognize your Canon VIXIA HV40 for film editing? In this article, we introduce the easy solution to you.

I have a Canon VIXIA HV40 and a iMac computer with iMovie. I have plugged in my camera to the computer with the plug that goes from inside the flip-open screen. The computer doesn't even seem to recognize that it is plugged in. (iMovie help just says plug it in turn it on and it will automatically start. When I turn to Avid Media Composer, the software can recognize my HV40, but the output HDV footage seems to be hard for editing within it.

I have read around and I’m not the only one that is having difficulty with this camera. One suggestion that has worked for more than one person is to change the settings on the camera, before connecting it to the Mac.

Put the camera in camera mode, and set it to record HDV. Then change it to playback mode, go into the menu and down to the play out setup. Make sure DV OUTPUT is set to HDV/DV now close the menu. Then connect it, and try to import. Frustratingly, my iMac read the cam, but iMovie still failed to capture the video from Canon Vixia HV40.

Another straightforward fix is to convert Canon VIXIA HV40 video to a Mac much more compatible format. I’ve had the big success in this try. If you are facing the similar issues with your HV40, check out the solution below.
