The Central Bank of Nigeria has directed that all
bank customers in the country must have their
biometric data captured by June 2015.
The CBN said this in a circular to the Deposit Money
Banks, with Ref: bps/dir/gen/cir/01/013 signed
yesterday by the Director, Banking and Payments
System Department, Dipo Fatokun.
The apex bank said that by March 2015,
transactions valued at N100 million and above,
should be allowed for customers with the Bank
Verification Number (BVN); these include, but is
not limited to money transfers, loans and
contingencies among others.
“That by June
2015, all
banks’
customers
should have
the BVN. Any
bank customer
without the
BVN would be
deemed to
have
inadequate
Know Your
Customer;
DMBs should intensify efforts to sanitise their
customers on the aforementioned development
and enroll them for the BVN accordingly,” the
circular said.
The CBN said it will monitor compliance with the
requirements of the circular, and defaulters will be
sanctioned.
