Ejigbo Local Council Development Area, LCDA, has commissioned the multi-million naira jetty, as part of efforts to boost intra-city transportation in the council area.
The initiative is expected to serve as an alternative means of transportation for residents who for many years have been experiencing traffic bottlenecks, getting in and out of the council.
The state Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, at the flag-off ceremony of the Jetty, Tuesday, called on the private sector to embrace the initiative by providing ferries for proper use of the jetty.
The commissioner while addressing dignitaries and residents of the council at the location of the jetty in Oke-Afa, commended Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan, for providing the jetty as a way of alleviating the sufferings of residents on road transportation in the area.
Opeifa added that by creating a water transportation system for Ejigbo residents, Bamigbetan had keyed into the Integrated Modern Transportation Policy of Lagos State Government as envisaged by the administration of Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 1999.
He said “One of the beauties of a state claiming a mega city status like Lagos is to have an integrated modern transportation system which include robust road, water, rail and air means of transportation for its citizenry”.
The commissioner stated further that Governor Babatunde Fashola led administration is determined to achieve this standard and that it was for this reason, the state restricted the operation of motorcycles, popularly called “Okoda” as means of transportation to specific routes.
