ILORIN-The Vice Chancellor of National Open University of Nigeria(NOUN),Professor Vincent Ado Tenebe has complained of paucity of funds from the federal government and other stakeholders to enable the institution fulfilled it’s mandate of advancing the cause of tertiary education in Nigeria.
Professor Tenebe said there is the need for deliberate funding from the federal government to ensure the establishment of the university across the nooks and crannies of the country in order to bring tertiary education to the door steps of all nigerians at affordable cost.
‎The NOUN vice chancellor who said this during the inauguration of the centre,NOUN Offa Community Study Centre in Offa weekend said it’s the seventh of such centre, facilitated through communal efforts in Nigeria describing it as the best so far.
According to. Him,”We need deliberate funding from the federal government and other stakeholders to have our centres across the nooks and crannies of Nigeria so that tertiary education can be within the reach of all Nigerians at affordable cost, that is the whole essence of establishing the university in the first instance”
Professor Tenebe particularly commended the sole efforts of Olofa of Offa,Oba Mustapha Gbadamosi for making the study centre a reality for the people of Offa and the environs to benefit from and urged other traditional rulers across the country to emulate such gestures.
His words,”The good and enlightened people of Offa, you may be pleased to know that the event of today would not have been possible but for the. Visionary leadership of your king, the Olofa of Offa,His Royal Majesty Oba Mufutau Muhammed Gbadamosi and members of his illustrious cabinet. The kabiyesi’s letter was the first in the series of actions that culminated in the event your are witnessing today. As a proactive leader, the Olofa has matched his words with actions”
He further said that ,”the community‎ has also made available fifty sets of computers, assorted pieces of furniture, air conditioner,a brand new standby 22KVA sound proof generator,a borehole,a block of lavatories etc lending credence to the famed hospitality of Offa. The community has also placed at. NOUN’s disposal the use of the ultra modern Offa Descendant Union Halls for purposes of examinations, social events and their likes,we are appreciative of these kind gestures”
The university Don also noted that,”aside ‎from the community study centres,we have successfully established study centres in a number of Nigerian Prisons. Our motivation for doing this is our institutional conviction that every single barrier to university education must be broken and that university education must be taken to the door step of every nigerian”.
He expressed the hope that NOUN presence. In Offa,”will help inspire the culture of lifelong learning among inhabitants of Offa and it’s environs.I call on everyone, both great and small,to explore this unique opportunity for self improvement which NOUN offers”.
