How Boko Haram Will Fall In Nigeria - Sani Umar

Sani Umar, Nigerian professor of history, has
explained why Boko Haram insurgency would
definitely come to an end in the country.
The expert shared his knowledge during
the workshop dedicated to the issue of terrorism in
Nigeria, Premium Times reports.
Umar noted that it cannot be predicted when exactly
the crisis will end.
“There’s a scientific literature on that. It takes an
average of 20 something years for most
insurgencies to come to an end. The scientific
evidence suggests that the impact of the ideology
and religious ideas in particular is ambiguous at its
best.”
The professor noted that different groups are
guided by different ideas for radicalization: it could
be either religious explanation, or personal or
collective grievance, among other factors.

Umar provided a 3-point solution plan of addressing
insurgency in the northeast. To contact the sect, find
out its sources of assistance, apply ceasefire
approach and disarm them while avoiding impunity
through the use of law.
The research was carried out by the Nigeria
Research Network of the Oxford University UK and
the Development Research and Project Centre in
Kano. The work considers a complex of economic
and social processes, as well as ideology and
radicalization factors, that would help to compose
and answer to Boko Haram insurgency.
Developing the idea, Rauf Mustapha said:
“Some people say the problem is poverty, others
say no its due to hate speech, I’m trying to show
how we can go beyond this deadlock and
disaggregate what the issues are, so that we can
begin to see where the real problems are.”

Ukoha Ukiwo, the deputy programme manager,
continued:
“The studies provide detailed explanations, new
findings and sound policy options that Nigerian
government, security agencies, civil society and
development partners interested in public security,
conflict management and peace building need to
consider in their responses to contemporary
security challenges.”
Meanwhile the world famous Nigerian, Nobel
laureate Wole Soyinka has recently criticized the
Federal Government over slow action against the
dreaded sect. He said that “the military would not
have had to cope with Boko Haram on this level if
the proper action had been taken at the right time”.
