| Lagos – Some politicians on Friday in Lagos advised the All Progressives Congress (APC) legislators in the National Assembly to find a way of settling their problems and settle down for effective service delivery. They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that there was no party crisis beyond settlement. NAN reports that the APC and some of its members in the National Assembly are at loggerheads over how principal officers in the federal legislative chambers should emerge. The failure to resolve the matter led to a rowdy session in the House of Representatives on Thursday before it adjourned till July 21. After the fracas The senate has also yet to fill some of the positions due to the disagreement. Reacting to the issue, the National Chairman of the Unity Party of Nigeria, Dr Frederick Fasehun, urged the lawmakers to look inward and settle their differences. “My advice for them is to look inward and settle their internal crisis and get on with the job. “It is four weeks today and they have not been able to do anything for this nation, so they must call themselves to order and settle their internal crisis,” Fasheun said. Alhaji Balarabe Musa, the National Chairman of Credible Alternative Alliance, an NGO, advised elected APC lawmakers to listen to the stand of the party, as it was supreme. “Party position must be supreme; every member of the APC must listen to the party, particularly elected members. ”It does not mean that the party must tend to dictate everything. “The elected members must realise that if they were not nominated by the party, they would not have been lawmakers,” Musa said, According to him, the party has the overall responsibility for the actions of its elected members and if there is crisis as there is now, the President has to intervene. “This is because he is the one who will be held responsible if it lingers and involves the generality of the people,” Musa said. Mr Denis Aghanya, the Director, Change Program and Global Transformation, an NGO, advised the leadership of APC to allow the National Assembly to choose their leaders for the sake of peace. “I will advise the leadership of APC to act with wisdom and let Nigerians have the change the party propagated, change is all inclusive about democratic process. “If the party canvassed for some people and those people were unable to secure the votes of members of the National Assembly, then they should allow the outcome of that election to be. “That is part of democracy; you don’t impose your choice on the people,” he said. The Lagos State Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, Mr Nkem Lemchi, also advised the lawmakers to seek peace for the sake of the people who voted them into office. He said that the APC took the peculiar composition of its membership for granted. According to him, the party, having made the mistake, should now sit down and calm frayed nerves so as to find a way out of the problem. Lemchi said if APC continued with the way it was going, it would continue to have problems. (NAN) | |
