An auto crash yesterday involving a Mercedes Benz
and Golf car left three people critically injured and
commuters stranded.
The accident which occurred at Kubwa, on Abuja
expressway caused traffic gridlock which left
commuters stranded as commercial vehicles could
advance to pick them to their destinations,
according to report from Vanguard.
The Golf car, which was conveying an aged man
and woman and a middle-aged woman, had engine
problem and was said to have stopped abruptly in
the middle of the road, as the Benz, said to be on
top speed, rammed into it.
It was gathered that the two vehicles were facing
Kubwa direction when the accident occurred at
about 11:20a.m.
According to the witness, passersby and
motorists promptly stopped to call the
attention of Federal Road Safety Corps,
FRSC, whose operatives unfortunately
arrived the scene 35 minutes after they
were informed.
It was gathered that police officers at the
scene promptly had to stop a painted taxi to
move the injured to the hospital.
Driver
of the
Black
Mercedes Benz, Idris Bashar, who
apparently did not sustain physical injury,
said, “the engine broke down and I hit them
from behind, I was behind them and they
stopped suddenly and I hit them.
“Some people are saying the engine broke
down, but all I know is that they were in
front of me and they stopped all of a
sudden.”
An eye witness who identified himself as
Ikechukwu Iweala, said he arrived the
accident scene shortly after it occurred and
called FRSC and FEMA when he saw the
three people lying on the road. “We weren’t
present at the time it took place, we were
just passing by and saw the whole situation
and decided to help as much as we could
with Road Safety and FEMA but we did not
see accident occur. We came, saw the
victims on the ground and decided to help
out,”
Leader of the FRSC team refused to disclose
the unit command he came from, but said
reluctantly that they received a distress call
and responded immediately to the scene of
the accident.
