1) Man Utd v Tottenham | Saturday 12:45

Well, welcome back! It’s been a torrid summer with little to get excited about but thankfully the Premier League returns this weekend. It may be overrated and sickeningly rich, but hey, it’s great to bet on.

To kick us off I’ll focus on the opening match between Manchester United and Tottenham. You may recall we were here last year. Old Trafford was the venue for the lunchtime season opener. United went to post a very short price to beat Swansea in Louis Van Gaal’s opener, but of course they came unstuck and lost 2-1. Any thoughts of the Red Devils winning the title were almost immediately killed off after that.

Will we see the same opening day ineptitude here? You can never really tell with Van Gaal’s United but I don’t think so. This is a side who really found their feet as the season progressed, and the foundation of that was their strong home form.

Those three dominant wins over Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester City between mid-March and early-April provides us with a peek into what might be this season. Yes, you may wish to point out their late-season collapse against the likes of West Brom and Everton but I put that down to the end of a very tiring, and at times traumatic season.

Van Gaal simply has to deliver a much stronger title challenge this season, and it starts here. Between that defeat to Swansea and the early-May loss to WBA Manchester United were P16 W14 D1 L1 in the league at Old Trafford. Formidable!

I’m not sure about Tottenham this season. It feels like they’ve stood still. I’m sure they’ll bring in more players over the next three weeks but a season bobbing between 5th and 7th awaits I think.

2) Albion Rovers v Ayr | Saturday 3:00p.

The League Two championship flag will be unfurled at Cliftonhill on Saturday afternoon as Darren Young’s side deservedly bask in the glory of their title triumph last season.

Unfortunately for Albion Rovers fans, the pre-match celebrations are as good as things are likely to get this weekend, because Ayr United will be determined to spoil the party when they go head-to-head with Albion in the League One curtain-raiser.

I’m not entirely sure what went wrong last season as the Honest Men limped to a dismal eighth-place finish in League One, but they can and must do much, much better this season.

Ayr have, undoubtedly, strengthened their squad over the summer with former Hibee Ross Caldwell and Alan Trouten, recruited from Brechin City, amongst those that I expect to make an impact at Somerset Park this season.

If Ayr are to have any real chance of challenging for honours this term, they quite simply must win matches like this because, quite frankly, the trip to Cliftonhill represents one of the easiest away days that McCall’s men will face in League One.

There should be no shortage of confidence amongst the Ayr United ranks either this weekend, for they cruised to a thoroughly deserved and convincing win against Albion at Somerset Park just two weeks ago in the Petrofac Training Cup.

Before the first ball is kicked this weekend, Albion will be above Ayr United in the League One table – by virtue of alphabetical order, of course – but I expect it to be for the last time this season because I think that these two teams will head in very different directions after Saturday’s showdown.

3) Oxford United v Crawley Town | Saturday 3.00 p.m


Oxford! Oxford !! They did conclude their campaign impressively, suffering just four defeats in their final 20 outings with defence their strong point – Oxford ending their efforts with 11 clean sheets from 22.

With decent transfer business conducted – defender George Baldock returns on loan, Sam Slocombe takes over the number one jersey, Liam Sercombe is a classy midfield addition from Exeter, striker Ryan Taylor arrives from Portsmouth and most impressively, speedster Kemar Roofe is back permanently having hit six goals in his final seven matches – and with a brand new playing surface conductive to passing football laid at the Kassam, the ‘no-excuse environment’ created by the club suggests everything’s in place for a tilt at the top-three.

The total opposite can be said of Crawley. Town fought valiantly against League One relegation under Dean Saunders’ rule last term but have undergone huge changes over the summer. Mark Yates has been charged with stabilising the ship and the club admit bouncing back to the third tier is probably unlikely as they look to consolidate.

Obviously friendly results and performances need to be taken with a pinch of salt but Yates’ comments after Crawley’s final warm-up fixture were striking. Having lost to National South side Whitehawk, the Town manager said, “We couldn’t get near them all day today. “We had a general tiredness and lethargy. They were better than us by a million miles and credit to them for that”. It’s 1.75 (Favourit) The U’s pocket the opening day points.

Crawley fans would probably bite your hand off if you offered them mid-table mediocrity and things could take a turn for the worse before improving. Yates has plugged the huge holes in his squad with freebies and kids but there remains a void at left-back. And if pre-season results are anything to go by, the Red Devils need a whole lot of surgery before Saturday.
